THE STANDARD. GENERAL DESCRIPTION.

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is recognised as the world's leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibres. It defines high-level environmental criteria along the entire organic textiles supply chain and requires compliance with social criteria as well.

Only textile products that contain a minimum of 70% organic fibres can become GOTS certified. All chemical inputs such as dyestuffs and auxiliaries used must meet certain environmental and toxicological criteria. The choice of accessories is limited in accordance with ecological aspects as well. A functional waste water treatment plant is mandatory for any wet-processing unit involved and all processors must comply with minimum social criteria. The key criteria of GOTS, its quality assurance system and the principles of the review and revision procedure are summarised in this section

CERTIFICATION

On-site inspection and certification of processors, manufacturers and traders performed by independent specially accredited bodies is the basis of the GOTS monitoring system in order to provide a credible assurance for the integrity of GOTS certified textiles.

HOW TO BECOME CERFTIFIED

This section informs textile processing, manufacturing and trading entities how to apply for certification according to the Global Organic Textile Standard, how they can use their certification and key components of the applicable inspection procedure.

APPROVED CERTIFICATION BODIES

This section lists the 18 certification bodies that are currently approved to certify entities of the textile supply chain and their products according to GOTS. In principle all certifiers can offer their GOTS certification services in their approved scopes worldwide. The certifiers are listed with their headquarters addresses. Contact details of any local offices or representatives that can provide information with regard to GOTS certification and countries in which they have certified GOTS clients are also listed. The approved scopes (1,2,3) indicate the type of entities in the textile supply chain for which each certifier can offer certification as well as whether the certifier is entitled to issue lists of approved inputs (positive lists) to suppliers of the chemical industry (scope 4).

HOW TO GET CHEMICAL INPUTS APPROVED

Chemical inputs used by textile processors must comply with the corresponding GOTS criteria. Accordingly manufacturers and suppliers of dyestuffs, pigments and auxiliary agents can get their products approved on corresponding 'letters of approval' issued by certifiers who have been approved for this specific task.

CONDITIONS FOR CERTIFICATION BODIES

Certification bodies must demonstrate their qualification and expertise in the field of organic textile quality assurance prior to their approval in an accreditation process specifically developed for GOTS. Accreditation is conducted by valid accreditation body such as the main partner for this process, International Organic Accreditation Services (IOAS). GOTS approved certifiers must adhere to defined requirements related to qualification of staff, advanced training, content of their inspection protocol and other related quality aspects.
